How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together

February, 2012

Dear Friends,

Shavua Tov,

Last Shabbat we read Parashat Yitro, including the Ten Commandments. It is always elating and very moving to see a whole congregation arise to read the Ten Commandments, as though we are on Mt. Sinai.

I am very proud to belong to the Jewish People who have bequeathed such inspiring values to mankind.

Friends from America at Or Hadash, Bat Mitzvah group ceremony, Interfaith activities

January 2012

Dear Friends,

Hodesh Tov, A Good Month!

The new secular year 2012 got off to a great start for Or Hadash. Although it has been very cold in Haifa the last few of weeks, it doesn`t compare to what our East Coast friends are experiencing in America these days.

Getting Ready for Hanukah

Dec. 16th, 2011

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow we will read Parashat Vayeshev, which opens the third part of the book of Genesis, which consists of the four parashot (Torah portions) of Joseph’s stories in Egypt. In other words, in the second part of the book we hear the stories of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sara, Rebecca, Rachel and Lea and now we begin to hear the stories about the children of Jacob - Israel.
Joseph was a righteous man who was committed to telling the truth to his family even though they found it difficult to hear and relate to his dreams.
I believe a true leader should always speak his mind even when truth is not easy to accept and people are not always willing to hear it.
Fortunately, we only have good news to tell you about at Or Hadash. We apologize for the delay in sending out our newsletter, it has been yet another extremely hectic month with three B’nai Mitzvah celebrations each week, so many activities and as much as we tried we simply didn`t get to putting everything in writing until now.

And now we will tell you about our last few weeks of many activities at Or Hadash:

Haifa 2nd Graders Receive the Torah at Or Hadash, WUPJ President Visit our Congregation.

11/11/11

Dear Friends, Shabbat Shalom,

Tomorrow we will read Parashat VaYira, the fourth Torah portion which tells about God’s revelation to Abraham. Parashat VaYikra is an extremely powerful and intriguing portion involving the very origin faith of Jews since it deals with revelation and many other issues, as well as the binding of Isaac, son of Abraham at the end.
My belief says that as much as life is complex and complicated at times, we always have moments of enlighten, of revelation, where we can see the light, blessing and abundance of God.

Welcoming Rabbi Steven Fuchs, WUPJ President, Concluding the holiday season, opening Or Hadash’s educational year.

October 28th, 2011

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a month filled with family and friends who shared the joy, prayers and celebrations of the holidays, just like we did.

Tomorrow we will read Parashat Noah in our synagogue, which begins with the words: “These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6 vs. 9).

At Or Hadash we do our best to walk in Noah’s footsteps. We try to be a congregation of just members who perform good deeds.

Since Noah had three children, I would like to write about three major topics in this letter.

Friendship between Jews and Non-Jews, WUPJ President – Stephen Fuchs Visit

September 4th, 2011

Dear Friends,

Now that hurricane Irene has dissipated and we have heard back from most of our friends and family members we can breathe a sigh of relief. We are deeply sorry that 43 people were killed in the storm and we hope rebuilding where destruction was wreaked will be fast and easy.

OR HADASH HAS A NEW BOARD!

August 7th, 2011

Dear Friends, Shavua Tov,

Yesterday we began reading the fifth and last book of the Torah –Devarim which explains in a new way many of the commandments of the previous four books. The book of Devarim contains in it three of Moses’s speeches in which he teaches us it is sometimes good to tell things again, especially told from a new perspective.

Dear Friends:

A little change of pace this week. This letter is being written by Rabbi Richard Agler of Boca Raton, FL. I am here volunteering in Israel, at Or Hadash in particular, to help strengthen both the congregation and our movement. So what is it like to be an American Reform Rabbi at an Israeli congregation?  Busy, for sure!
