A Bar Mitzvah Service for a Teenager with Severe Physical Disabilities at the Hod School, March 2008

On Tuesday, March 25th, Rabbi Nof went (with two Or Hadash staff members) to the Hod School to perform a bar mitzvah ceremony. The Hod School is for children with severe physical, mental and/or emotional disabilities. Hanna Tidhar, the school principal, did an excellent job organizing the students for the ceremony. We opened with songs to get all the children participating in the service. The children were well behaved and participated in the service as much as possible. The bar mitzvah boy tried to read from the Torah scroll we lay in front of him, it was an overwhelming moment for all of us. We presented the bar mitzvah boy with gifts from our congregation. Then we continued to sing songs. The bar mitzvah boy's friends came up to congratulate him. Each one of them said a few words in honor of his special day.
